Healthy ageing

The Healthy Ageing Programme draws on recent research undertaken across a number of disciplines and cultures to empower older people in Waltham Forest to live as full, independent, healthy and active a life as possible.

The programme is based on research carried out over 25 years in Okinawa in Japan that showed Okinawa has the longest living people in the world but, more importantly they remain fit and healthy for longer and the incidence of heart disease, stroke and other diseases that are common in the West, is much less.

The research showed that the four main components of healthy ageing are:

Keeping active
Healthy diet
Improving your self esteem (spirituality)
Reducing social isolation
Health advice for older people

In addition to these areas, the Healthy Ageing Programme includes health advice for older people and a database of local clubs and groups.

Many local older people have taken part in the video as well as health professionals. The aim of the video is to give older people more information on keeping active, spirituality, healthy eating and the importance of social networks. There is also information on healthy feet, smoking cessation, preventing heart disease, breast screening and tests for high cholesterol, diabetes and raised blood pressure. The video was filmed at various locations throughout the Borough and most of the video is presented as older people telling their own stories.
