Improved self-esteem
Stronger muscles and bones
Relaxation and reduced stress

Research shows that being active reduces the risk of:

Heart disease
Falls and injuries
Obesity
High blood pressure
Adult onset diabetes
Osteoporosis
Stroke
Depression
Colon cancer
Premature death

It doesn't have to be hard work!

Exercise doesn't have to be vigorous for you to benefit. Moderate, regular exercise is just as beneficial. Gentle walking is a great way to get fit and other activities such as gardening, walking the dog or even child minding, can keep you physically active. Becoming a volunteer in your local community will ensure you get out and about on a regular basis. More information on volunteering can be found here or by telephoning Jean Williams on 020 8539 8356.

It doesn't have to cost a lot ...

There's an easy way to stay slim and stave off ageing, heart disease and osteoporosis and it doesn't have to cost you a penny. All you have to do is walk for half an hour a day. Walking can improve your circulation, control your blood pressure, boost your immune system, improve your bone density and promote a feeling of well-being, thanks to the feel-good endorphins produced during exercise.

Everyone can benefit ...

People with physical limitations and chronic conditions can also benefit by becoming more active. Increasing your level of physical activity as much as you are able can help offset many of the negative effects of certain diseases and disabling conditions. Some people do not work on the unit all of the time but come to see you if you require them, such as Speech and Language or your own social worker.

Some of the activities you might like to try include:
Home stretching routines
Swimming
Aqua fitness programmes
Speciality classes for people with arthritis or osteoporosis
Walking
Tai Chi
Folk or line dancing
Simple yoga movements
Leg and ankle strengthening
Sitting or lying exercises
